TE Connectivity

November 30, 2021 By Brett Doar

TE makes a lot of the components that you will find in just about every electronic device. They make all kinds of sensors, relays, connectors, switches, cabling, you name it. I was approached by the wonderful folks at Contravent to create a machine that played music. It was a challenging project- we collaborated with Pull […]

Meccano Lab

February 2, 2017 By Brett Doar

I and the King Volcano World Industries (that is the name of my company) crew created this environment for Meccano*, called the Meccano Lab.  It served as the backdrop for an ad campaign for their 2017 toy line.  I really think Meccano is a great building toy, it lets you build […]

Intel IDF 15

January 22, 2016 By Brett Doar

In August, my team and I created the opening sequence for Intel’s IDF 2015 conference, introducing CEO Brian Krzanich’s keynote address. I collaborated with the Berlin-based company Airstage, who created the floating orbs that emerged from the boxes at the end.  Some of my favorite airstage stuff is the stuff they create for Festo. I’d like […]

Clock Installation at Googleplex

November 15, 2014 By Brett Doar

In early November the giant clock from Google IO 2014 was installed at Google headquarters in Mountain View CA.   It was quite an undertaking- it required the cooperation of, I think, 4 separate departments.  In the building where it was installed, the entrance was too small to accommodate the machine, so the door and […]

Mechanical sample machines for Kiehl's 160 year retrospective

I was commissioned in May by Sub Rosa to create a memorable machine to dispense samples of Kiehl’s skincare products for their flagship store in New York, as part of their 160th anniversary retrospective. I created five machines out of steel and brass. Here are some photos of them installed in the store.

Jenbacher Sculpture for GE at TED

March 28, 2011 By Brett Doar

I was commissioned by GE to build a kinetic sculpture for the 2011 TED conference in Long Beach CA. The piece is inspired by a Jenbacher natural gas engine, and is intended to point out the engine’s capability to meet the energy needs of 18000 typical homes. Each little house represents 100 homes.
