Slouchy

January 13, 2005 By Brett Doar

Slouchy’s original name was “Slouching Towards Bethlehem”, after Yeat’s poem “The Second Coming”, but that name sounded so pretentious that I just truncated it.

Slouchy is made mainly from perforated galvanized steel “plumber’s tape”. It has a little speaker in the back of the cone which plays a little sequence of a dinosaur growling (the chip was reclaimed from a roaring dinosaur electronic toy). Its head movement is a basic “scotch yoke” configuration, using a tuning fork for the yoke. Unfortunately the camera I had back in those days would record sound but it always got stripped out when I imported it. That’s why some of these videos are silent, and why here I have decided to use Queen as the soundtrack, at least for the time being.
